Goodbye to the Zodiac

By David Rothman

Zodiac 1Details from ars technia and the Zodiac Web site and the Inquirer. Related: Zodiac 1: $199 for new 480X320 handheld. Too bad. From afar, the Zodiac struck me as one hellva e-book machine. With the Palm OS, you very likely could have used Mobipocket, not just PalmReader. Could have? Wait. If you’re willing to risk possible support problems with an orphaned machine, you can shop for a Zodiac on eBay.

  1. Don’t forget Plucker and Palm Fiction. Palm handhelds are impressive e-book readers, and their extra-long battery life and bright screens help too.

  2. Thanks for your thoughts on e-book-reading software. I’d encourage people, by the way, to read Looking for Books on the Net–your e-book perspective from Italy.

  3. Thank you David, I did not even remember having published the post you mention. :) I stumbled upon your blog just a couple of weeks ago, and I’m very impressed. Keep up the good work.

If you don’t mind readers’ suggestions, I think that a practical, how-to series on how to scout for books on the net might be interesting for a few readers.

The first topics that come to my mind are how to use the Amazon recommendation engine, how to find lists matching your preferences, where to buy ebooks and how to reformat them for various devices. Etc.

  4. Wonderful hearing from you, Ludo. I’m stretched thin but agree with you on the usefulness of a how-to series. Would you care to write it yourself–for pubication in both your blog and the TeleBlog? I think you’d do a wonderful job, and if you wanted, I could offer suggestions and other comments. That way, I’d add value. We could do this as a series. Needless to say, I’ll also welcome other how-to articles from other readers. Thanks. David

  5. The Zodiac is a killer (no pun intended) ebook reading device. I was just using it a few minutes ago. It reads great vertical or horizontal.

I have a Zodiac and I never called their tech support. I just used http://www.tapland.com and http://www.zodiacgamer.com, which were great sites. It is a very fun and useful device. Most devices I get are either fun or useful.

I will hang on to it for a while. It is still a sweet device.

  6. Thanks, Alslayer. What we have here, alas, is the Good dying young. - David
