Free graphic novel for PSP and Web viewing: In the spirit of ‘Escape from New York,’ kinda
“We’ve been talking about doing a graphic novel for some time,” Chad Allen, a coauthor of NYC2123, writes in a blog, ” but when I got my PSP I was a bit disappointed with the potential for cool non-game non-movie content and the reality of how crappy most of the available content was.” Check out the debut of the serial in progress, and think about a voluntary donation. The first few sentences:
In 2054 a massive tsunami devastates Manhattan. The island’s bridges and tunnels are destroyed. Two years of riots follow. Outlaw barge cities form in the waters around Manhattan, trafficking in illegal cybernetic body modificatons and open source drugs. in 2065 the construction of a 20-meter-high barrier encircling what is left of Manhattan is completed and martial law is declared.”
OK, I see some Escape from New York in this Creative Commons-licensed work (available for onscreen viewing via a browser, not just in PSP format). But then Snake Plissken wasn’t into Wi-Fi and the rest, nor was body-hacking the rage. Besides, I love Paco Allen’s drawings. At the pure gut level–this isn’t high literature–the writing itself holds my attention. Congrats, Chad, Paco and colleagues! So now here’s the big question. How long until someone does “Escape from D.C.”? Given all the piracy from the public domain, I’d say: “That’s where the criminals already prevail.”
