‘Fiddling With Format While DVD’s Burn’
Yet another lesson for the e-book biz? High-def DVD formats are losing out amid a format war, and meanwhile consumers are turning elsewhere for content. Of course, in e-books, the problem is even tougher–weaning people off the already-established medium of paper books. Not to mention DRM stupdity. No wonder the e-book business limps along with such pathetic sales. Accept no substitue for a good razing of the Tower of eBabel. If publishers want to enjoy the many advantages of e-books, they will pay attention to core formats and not be diverted by, say, talk of container formats. They’ll help but are no substitute for a full tear-down of the Tower.
