A look at eBabel Central: The IDPF–run by tech companies, not publishers (no ifs or buts)
Jon Noring will be along soon with a piece on the composition of the board of the International Digital Software Forum–whoops, the International Digital Publishing Forum. It seems that four of the seven current board members come from tech-related companies rather than book publishers or the library world.
And this is the outfit we’re supposed to trust to bring about genuine e-book standards for publishers and consumers? I know. The IDPF talks the standards talk. The walk is a different issue. Will consumer convenience really count more than the prosperity of Adobe and ETI when tricky DRM-related compatibility issues come up? I’d love to be proven wrong. A move of standards setting to an OASIS tech committee would help.
Hold off on your comments, Proprietary Guys. You can vent your wrath in the comment section of Jon’s piece.
Reminders: I’m speaking for myself here. Jon will have his own take. Also, keep in mind that I myself dislike DRM but recognize the fixation of major publishers on having it.
Update, Aug. 3: Jon’s still planning the piece, which got delayed for schedule-related reasons.
