‘Mobipocket eBook Reader for Mac OSX’ via emulation hack
Tech-hip Mac owners can read Mobipocket e-book on their machines through an ingenious hack—the use of Palm emulation. Check out the details via Naughty Bits, which I discovered through WordPresses’s list of incoming links. I agree with NB that Amazon/Mobi is arrogant, arrogant, arrogant in not doing an official Mac version; if resources are the problem, then Amazon should give Mobi the wherewithal to act. Let’s hope the hack increases pressure on Mobi to stop dissing Mac owners who’d rather not mess with Windows on their own boxes or PCs.

The easy way to use Mobipocket on a Mac, at least until they produce a Mac version, is to use Parallels. Mobipocket works perfectly running in Windows under Parallels.

Does Mobipocket software run under WINE? If so, then Mac people can install Darwine http://sourceforge.net/projects/darwine/, which doesn’t require you to have a Windows license.

I still say the best solution to this problem is for everyone to adopt the .epub format. With the open format, you don’t have this kind of crap to deal with.

J: I don’t know the answer. Sounds like a great idea. I hope someone tests Mobi with Darwine and reports back to us. I’d also be curious to know how Darwine works with Sony Connect software.

Some folks at MobileRead have said that the Sony software works under WINE, except for firmware updating.
