Christmas and John Cheever

By Robert Nagle

image

For those of you feeling blue about Christmas, here’s a story by John Cheever to put things in perspective: Christmas is a Sad Season for the Poor.  (Kudos to the New Yorker for opening its archives).

BTW, isn’t it strange that while TV and cinema flood the airwaves with Christmas episodes and pop musicians record Christmas songs, authors rarely write stories or novels with holiday themes (with poetry being the exception perhaps)?

Here’s something Scrooge-ish: there’s a shortage of XO free ebooks suitable for elementary age children. But, alas, there will always be Cory Doctorow novels to download.
