Amazon to offer DRM-free MP3s from Sony BMG: The e-book angle

By David Rothman

amazonmp3store Now that Amazon will soon offer DRMfree MP3s from Sony BMG, all four majors labels are covered. So how will Apple respond? Might it think, “Let’s invade Amazon’s territory and take e-books more seriously?”

Meanwhile the inevitable questions linger. Why DRM for books but not for music—beyond the fact that Amazon may see DRM as protection for its proprietary Mobipocket and Kindle formats? Yep, many publishers insist on DRM. But what about other factors, such as the fact that books are often thought of as a more permanent medium than music—at least paper books? That in turn leads to yet another question. As we know, you can’t own a DRMed book for real since you’re constantly at the mercy of the vendor, who might even decide to drop a format, just as Amazon dropped Adobe. Hmm. A little contradiction of logic? The content community values permanence in terms of the protection of its property but not of the purchases of consumers.

Housekeeping: Looks as if the XO review is delayed yet another day, for time reasons.
