Laugh of the day: SlashDot item depicting Wayan as an Intel agent undermining the OLPC project

By David Rothman

wayanwedding-2 You already know. Writings from Wayan Vota, editor of the unofficial OLPC News, show up in the TeleBlog, and on occasions, I just might appear in OLPCN. Now guess what SlashDot wittingly or unwittingly gave Wayan as a wedding present when he had a few other things on his mind—a discussion focused around the issue of whether he was sabotaging OLPC for Intel, developer of the rival ClassMate machine. Read Intel employee caught running OLPC News site just for laughs, then check out Wayan’s rebuttal and and one from Mary Lou Jepsen, former CTO at OLPC.

The real issue here isn’t OLPC News’ credibility, but SlashDot’s. Given Wayan’s slim connections with Intel—as director of the Geek Corps, which had Intel as a techology partner, he sat on the company’s advisory board for NGOs—the word “employee” is misleading at best. Wayan isn’t even with the Geek Corps anymore. Far more significantly, you need only read OLPC News to see that its ‘tude toward OLPC is just like ours, that of a candid, mouthy friend unafraid to dole out a little tough love while all the time rooting for the organization’s success. Meanwhile congrats to Wayan and his beautiful bride!

  1. Slashdot long ago lost its credibility with nonsense like this. And money down, they never correct it. Long ago stopped reading Slashdot precisely because of idiocy like this.
