E-book gizmos for biz: S&S using Sony Readers internally, other firms also experimenting

By David Rothman

sonyreader-505s Simon and Schuster isn’t just authorizing e-book editions—its sales reps are toting around Sony Readers to keep up with all the books they’re pushing in P versions. And editors are using Sony readers to share manuscripts.

You can read about S&S and other business-related apps of e-book devices in a Computerworld piece, Are Enterprises Ready for E-Readers? CW correctly wonders why we don’t see more of this kind of thing, given the efficiencies of E. Actually the business market is a major focus of iRex Technologies, makers of the iLiad, which, with its eight-inch screen, is better suited for reading PDFs than its competitors are.

  1. New York junior editors have really rotten jobs. They aren’t paid enough to live in nice nearby apartments, so many of them end up with long commutes. Because business hates waste, the publishers have decided that their junior editors should read submissions during their commutes. That way they can spend their working day in meetings.

So, yeah. Let’s definitely give them Sony Readers (or Kindles or eBookWises) to let them get some reading done without having to drag around countless pounds of paper. Even better, maybe more of them will start accepting electronic submissions, which will make life that much easier (and cheaper) for authors. (And if you’ve never mailed off a manuscript, you have no idea how quickly postage costs can add up).

I’m glad to see parts of NY are waking up to the possibilities.
