$20 Kindle rebate: Legit and the first of many?

By David Rothman

imageAmy’s Tech Store, apparently an Amazon seller, is offering a $20 Kindle rebate. Caveat emptor. Remember, I didn’t go through with the transaction and don’t know about the rebate. Price of the Kindle is still the usual $399.

What the rebate form says:

“To Receive Your Mail-In Rebate:

1. Purchase a Kindle between 5/1//2008 and 5/31/08 at amystechstore.com.

2. Requests must be postmarked by 6/30/08. Claims postmarked after this date will not be honored.

3. Please allow 4-6 weeks for processing. If you do not receive your rebate after 6 weeks, you may email amy@amystechstore.com and you will receive a prompt response.

4. Please keep a copy of all materials submitted for your records.

5. Mail this completed certificate along with a photocopy of your packing slip and the original Kindle UPC (cut out from the box) to:

Amy’s Tech Store
Kindle Rebate
PO Box 56612
Atlanta GA 30343″

Assuming the offer is legit, is there a publicity angle here—nothing more? If so, mission accomplished. I’ll be most interested to hear if some brave soul goes through with this—and if the check arrives. What do you think, gang? Is it worth taking a chance here? And do you think other sellers will start offering rebates, maybe larger? Just what is Amazon’s usual payment to sellers in this case? Maybe $24 or around there? If so, maybe Amy is still making a small profit if you don’t consider her time or her possible employees’.

And meanwhile back on eBay: The cheapest “Buy It Now” Kindle I could find was a “new & unsealed” and “unregistered” one for $371, excluding the $24.99  U.S. shipping cost. You might also find a used Kinde for $375 with a shipping cost of $15.

(Tech Store mention spotted amid MobileRead posts.)

One Response to “$20 Kindle rebate: Legit and the first of many?”

  1. Yes, it looks legit. Amazon allows affiliates (associates is what they call them) to build their own store. This looks like one of their basic store templates.

You are still buying the Kindle directly through Amazon and she is giving you $20 from the commission she earned from that sale. She won’t make as much, but it’s a clever way to drive traffic to her site (as you already mentioned).
