>>>The only true way to guarantee eternal access to e-books is to use a variety of business approaches and avoid Rube Goldbergish technology and the "company store" approach.

And although no one wants to admit it, piracy packrats.

Some day in the future, we'll find out that only *one* copy of something exists -- thanks to a pirate.

(I've had some *legal* experience here, pre-Internet, owning the *only* copy of an album that the Copyright holder himself didn't have any longer.)

I had seen reports of the fire on news broadcasts but didn't realise it would hit this site! A compelling argument for distribution of books in non-drm formats - and plenty of mirror sites spread all over the world. That way even a major catastrophe would not see the loss of priceless documents/ films/literature (the destruction of the library of Alexandria is a valuable history lesson!)
Glad to see you did your backups - I wish more people paid attention to this procedure.

Thanks, HeavyG! Some days before the incident, I'd made a full file of the database, comments included. Luckily that wasn't necessary to use.

For the most recent posts, I just plugged in old items from Windows Live Writer.

Comments restoration will be by way of the RSS feed as cached for existing Bloglines subscribers.

Still, although we've lost nothing, the above was hardly an optimal approach.

A mirroring arrangement--allowing service to continue with a flip of the switch, so to speak--would be better.

Further suggestions welcome from you and others. Just remember our huge IT budget ;-)

Welcome back!

Was wondering what had happened to you.

Just curious - do you not keep a backup of your site separate from your webhosting company?

Luckily newer servers purchased from TP weren't affected :)

But I honestly think ThePlanet handled the situation quite well given the circumstances...

Google around- you should see all the controversy it has started! Tin foil hat conspiracies!

Many thanks, Aaron, and if you can spread the word that we're back, then so much the better--so traffic counts will return to their earlier level and we can safeguard our Google numbers.

I really meant it about the comments. They're all safe by way of Bloglines---where people can read the TeleBlog comment feed. You have to have activated it to see the RSSed comments from a certain point. I had.

Best of all, using Windows Live Writer, I might be able to finish restoring the missing posts in the next hour or so.

Robert will follow with comment restoration, over the next few days.

Thanks,
David
