$199 iPhone with 3G support to be on sale July 11 in 20+ countries

By David Rothman

image Google newsround up here, Techmeme here, press releases here. This is great news for e-books—with a Mobi app on the way for the iPhone.

The Kindle will do fine, but might the iPhone actually count more in the end as an e-book reader, at least among younger people with eyes fit for small screens?

Separately, wouldn’t it be terrific if Stanza ended up with versions for handhelds, including not just the iPhone but popular PDAs? For now, Lexcycle offers iPhone export capabilities and will apparently end up on The Phone itself. Android and Java versions are "in the works."

imageBack to Apple: Excerpt from release: "iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11 for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) for the 8GB model and $299 (US) for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail stores and requires a new two year contract with AT&T for qualifying customers. iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes(R) 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers." Further info is here. App Store here.

Question: So what about a Touch equivalent without the AT&T costs? Also, might the iPhone someday be bundled with newspaper subscriptions, just as the iLiad is right now in Europe?

  1. I’m really hoping the new OS and API will lead to proper PDF support. No more weird workarounds!

  2. me too, michael! i’m happy with my 1st-gen iphone, but now i’m crossing my fingers for an apple touchscreen tablet in january. if it works like the iphone, but is maybe 3 times the screen size, i would be VERY happy with it as an e-reader.
