I had a Cybook for 14 months, handled it very carefully, but the screen has fractured for no apparent reason.

However, the build quality was appalling for the price, the screws at the corner constantly backed out and no doubt caused flexing that weakened the screen.

Eventually, I had to superglue the corners of the case (after 9 months) to stop the thing falling to pieces.

In my opinion, it is a badly designed heap of junk and I have replaced it with a HanLin V3, whcih is build much more solidly.

Hi everybody,
Mine was about a month old, the screen is ok for now...finger crossed. But the battery cover is very fragile. Just this evening I took it out of my bag and realised it had snapped around the screw area, i don't know how i broke it, it was in a protective pouch.

I wish I had read this before I bought the Cybook. My screen failed 2 week after I bought it. Like Enesto, the glass is not cracked, the bottom third of the screen has lines and stuff. Sounds like these things a very fragile. They are not marketed that way. Mine was in a cover.

Maybe its time to switch. As much as I hate the kindle, they're fixing broken screens for free:

I bought my Cybook on the first of May and used it for less than a month and the screen broke down.

Mt Cyobok screen appeared "broken" this morning without any apparent reason. The lower 1/3 of the screen is blank. The curious thing is that the glass itself is NOT broken. The line across the screen is beneath the glass, the glass cover itself is perfectly smooth.

Anyone, Any clues ?
I just contacted bookeen and waiting for a reply

I have received an answer from support stating that broken parts are not covered by the warranty and that I can have it repaired for 120 euros + shipping to France.
I am very disappointed.
To anyone looking for a reader: Be aware the Cybook screen is extremely fragile and repair is costly.

Since last Saturday I have the broken screen as well, after 6 months of usage. I read daily and I am very careful with the machine. I never dropped it or anything like that and it is always in its cover.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed on how the support is going to react, I really love the machine but I'm not spending 100+ euros on a 6 month old machine that I'm sure broke by itself. For that kind of money I can buy more (paperback) books then I can read ;-)

This is ridiculous. I've treated my Cybook more gently than my baby and I started getting those "lines" a few days ago. Now almost half the screen is washed out. I'm contacting Bookeen today, but from what I'm reading it seems like it's time to look at competitors. NOTHING this fragile should be kept outside of a protective glass case in a safe room or something!

My cybook screen just broke yesterday after 6 months use:
black and white vertical and horizontal lines.
I continuously hold it in its cover (bought for cybook) and treated with care. So I can't find any obvious reason why it happened.
Just contacted with bBokeen and waiting for reply.

My Cybook screen fractured yesterday afternoon and it did so for no reason I can see.
It wasn't dropped, it was in its case, it had been fine that morning.

The crack is in the upper left corner and all it had been doing was recharging before I picked it up again.

It might have been something I did earlier but reviewing my actions I can't be sure.
I'm wondering if I may actually have flexed the case at some point and started the fracture.

Early iPod Nanos in pockets weren't just scratched they were cracked. Apple made some fast changes and people learned to be a little more careful with them.
I think the Cybook case may need to be sturdier then it is now. It flexes, slightly, but that glass substrate doesn't.

No I was talking about iPod Nano's being destroyed, not scratched, until Apple did some more work.

However in this instance it's my turn to "eat crow".

Making allowances for the fact that it's almost out of warranty and that it has been used as a sample that would mean that something dinged the screen months ago and has only shown up now but I find that difficult to believe.

I've just (moments ago) had the second screen failure on my cybook. Both times inside the protective case, both times with little or (first time) absolutely no impact/crushing/etc. Its a joke - I've never had -anything- so fragile.

The comment about ipods is misleading - a $200 ipod getting scratched is not the same as a $500 ebook reader made out of thin glass and flexible plastic. There's no internal frame, there's no support and their answer is "oh well, too bad, pay us again."

Now that the software runs on other (stronger, cheaper) units, I'm definitely done with boookeen.

My Cybook did fail while sitting on my nightstand, and no it didn't fall on the floor.

the repair would have cost as much as a new unit, approx 180 us dollars plus shipping both ways.

Sorry Pam but glass can and does break for no freakin reason at times.
