Sony aims at Target tomorrow—but what’s ahead for October 2

By David Rothman

The Sony Reader will hit 1,600+ Target stores tomorrow, and Michael Harris raises some interesting possibilities in our comments section.

…My forecast is that the announcement is on the software side. Say the ability to read mobipocket. Or something with digital editions. Or an agreement with a major publishing house … more books to equal the Kindle, or possibly more books preloaded as a Christmas bundle. Or even an agreement with a major newspaper publisher.

I don’t think its hardware, and I think software/content would make more of a difference for Sony. A more prosaic guess would be in terms of distribution. We already know about Target. Maybe add-in Walmart, Sears, and such.

  1. I was surprised when I saw a Sony Reader hanging on a peg in my local Target store, but now that I’ve read this article it makes more sense. I’m happy to see the electronic reading device becoming a little more mainstream.

I’m not sure that people will really understand what it is unless they’ve already heard what the Sony Reader is all about. I’m not prepared to buy one right now because the technology is being improved so quickly there is no telling how long it will be before this model becomes obsolete.
