Two more Electronic Arts DRM lawsuits filed

By Chris Meadows

We reported a couple of months ago about the class-action lawsuit filed against Electronic Arts over Spore’s use of SecuROM digital rights management software. SecuROM is known for causing a number of problems to computers on which it is installed, and being very hard to remove.

As sighted on Slashdot, that lawsuit has just been joined by two more. Two separate lawsuits have been filed over SecuROM’s use in EA games—the free trial of the Spore Creature Creator, and The Sims 2: Bon Voyage.

The plaintiffs are claiming that there was no indication given in the packaging or EULA of these games that SecuROM would be installed on their computers, and that SecuROM caused them all sorts of problems after installation.

Are these honest complaints about the obnoxious DRM EA has been using, or were their plaintiffs inspired by the first lawsuit to try to jump on the bandwagon and get some free money? Either way, they will at least serve to shine more light on EA’s use of consumer-unfriendly DRM.
