James said that Pan Macmillan were not putting individual apps into the iTunes store... so what's the deal with the Hitchhikers guide then?

Getting any ebook content at all in the UK that isn't Moby Dick or Little Women is laughably poor.

Pan Macmillan (UK trade publisher) has partnered with Lexcycle to include book samples in the Stanza app for the iPhone, and we're selling selected titles DRM-free from our site for use on the iPhone, via Stanza. We're not putting individual ebook apps into the App Store though. Perhaps the article was to do with Macmillan (US trade publisher) - our sister company...

Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks, Chris, for the tip about adding content to Stanza from Fictionwise.com.

James - there was an article that indicated Pan Macmillan was going to be offering ebooks as a separate application which makes little sense to me given that there is a limit to how many apps any person can have on the their phone and it really clutters the "Springboard" of the iPhone. It makes more sense to have one application and the ebooks to be subsets of that one application.

I would love to ask you a few questions about the St. Martin Press and Tor ebook programs but they aren't really relevant to this post (and I don't know if you have any input as to those two publishing arms ebook programs) but if you like, give me a holler at litte.jane at gmail.com

Pan Macmillan is planning to place its books in the App store as bundled appbooks—a single file containing book and reader all in one. There was a mention of it in a story a few days back.

Hi Jane- not sure what you mean by 'and none of this individual app thing that Pan Macmillan is thinking about'... can you clarify? Thanks, James (HO Digital Dev at Pan Mac)

Just to note, you can download past purchases from both Fictionwise and eReader into Stanza. You just have to add "mobile.fictionwise.com" and "mobile.ereader.com" as websites in Stanza's on-line catalog screen (hit the + at the lower right, then choose "web site"), then use the web browser to sign into your account there and download the eReader versions from your bookshelf. It is a good deal more complicated than doing it with eReader, alas.

What you really can't do right now is download personal content from anywhere, even stanza.fictionwise.com. They're going to work on that.
