Android alliance picks up new members: The e-book angle
The Open Handset Alliance, supporting Google’s new Android operating system for cell phones, has picked up 14 members—including Sony and Toshiba.
Good news for e-book-lovers and publishers? Definitely? Without strong competition, Apple would be more of a threat to independent companies like Lexcycle / Stanza developing e-book software for the iPhone. The ultimate result could be Apple squeezing publishers who wanted access to all those millions of iPhones and Touches out there.
Apple would like nothing better than an iTunes-style stranglehold on e-books, at least for cellphones and the like.
We’ve seen Amazon pushing its proprietary standards for its Kindle tablet for another book market. The last thing we need is for Apple to become the Amazon of cellphones.
