With Steve Jobs apparently going "dark," this will translate Apple becoming realistic in pricing and game playing without his mystique

Look at the stock price of Apple to see my point

I doubt Apple is going to go on a jihad against other e-book reader apps at this late date. The're already out there and used by hundreds of thousands of people. It wouldn't make sense for them to yank them now.

Karen, that is a disturbing thought. I think Apple would have to have decided they actually want to compete (i.e., building in a reading app and selling ebooks directly in the iTunes store alongside the music and movies and everything else). But should they decide to do that, you raise a fair point, given the history.

Last comment is correct.

Apple can be evil. For this reason, and for many more others, I am reading my ebooks on my N810 Internet Tablet for Nokia.

It's gorgeous screen is fantastic for reading e-books.
Plus, it's mostly open-source. That couples well with open-reading.

Just hope Apple doesn't decide Stanza competes with it's new reading app (which treats each book as an app) or that using it allows you to access "objectionable content" (as determined by Apple - so far, this only applies to apps and books, all music is exempt). If it does, poof goes your app and all your books, with no notice from Apple (as other apps have had happen).

I took the plunge and bought a Sony Reader

An excellent investment, because there are waves of new reads of FREE books, plus over a week period, I am continually saving articles into Word so on the weekend I download my own "magazine" to read through the upcoming week

The Reader is a beauty: small and does one thing well

I thought about at first buying one of the those small laptops, but I do NOT need another computer, plus a battery that lasts around an hour or two

I now carry my library with me

I do wish it was back lit, though you can buy a light for it, but at $60 for at most a $19.95 item is NOT worth it

I wish Amazon would sell Kindle Books to non-registered Kindle owners, but the co is treating the Kindle like Apple does with its products: over priced, but I suspect Amazon will realize in this awful economy how much money it is losing not going the "razor company/printer company" route: give away the product almost at cost to sell the razors (books) over and over and over...I bet publishers and authors sure realize this stupid game of Amazon

In sum: the Sony Reader is a joy! Other than being back lit, I cannot think of an improvement
