Well, wonder what else will be going wrong. These things usually run in 3s. I have 14 titles being yanked by overdrive on fictionwise. Fictionwise has been good enough to work at making 13 of those available in ereader format. And I am grateful for that. But my new cybook only uses mobipocket. I am able to download and read these titles on the device... but should I replace the device in 5 years, my books will no longer work.

Now the Camel Club series by Baldacci I was about to start will have to wait... I have purchased the first 3 books in the series... but the latest 4th book is unavalable.

Is this some new strategy... choosing not to sell your product to consumers who are ready to buy?

I don't know if this is related, but last night I got an email from Fictionwise stating that certain titles in my bookshelf were being pulled and that in order to keep my books, I was instructed to download them by 31 JAN 09 and keep as a back up.

>>>It is much easier for new rivals to create and distribute e-books than movies, and customers just might start favoring books and authors without the complexities that Hachette is pushing for.

Yep. That's why the entire existing model is doomed.

And good bloody riddance to it!

*Now* maybe people will understand why I said what I did here:

Huh, that's funny. I saw an article about Hachettes pushing the use of XML in e-book publishing yesterday that I was considering blogging. Probably just as well I didn't.

It's worth noting that regional sales restrictions have long been a matter of complaint at such places as the Mobipocket forum and MobileRead. Another case where the licensing and marketing framework for traditional books has caused problems for the nascent e-book industry.
