One thing America still leads the world in is the creation of entertainment. our movies and TV may be trash, but they're popular around the world. Yet, if they're simply downloaded without regard to the rights of the producer, the economics of creating that content will be destroyed. Now, it's true that there is user-created video content--just as there are free videogames and free fan fiction, etc. I don't see these as a desirable replacement for professionally produced digital content. The digital revolution should be a way of passing cost savings to customers while allowing authors and editors who provide value to benefit from that value.
