Paula Berinstein, producer and host of The Writing Show, offers 52 sensible creativity lips for writers—in a list of exercises from her new e-book. Unlock Your Creativity is on sale at Lulu and the Amazon Kindle store.
The first 15 tips are: “1. Create a ritual. 2. Vary your routine. 3. Appreciate the chaos. 4. Get curious. 5. Use your senses. 6. Get ridiculous. 7. Free associate. 8. Play with words. 9. Observe. 10. Change your environment. 11. Go psychedelic [I assume she means in spirt, not pharmaceutically]. 12. Think geographically. 13. Recognize opportunity. 14. Immerse yourself in your favorites. 15. Increase awareness.” I’ve grouped Paula’s paragraphs together to save space.
Later this year I’ll be on her show, which I love. given its emphasis on the practical. The newest segment is Five Essential Rules for Writing Nonfiction, with veteran editor Cynthia Clampitt.
Update, Feb. 24: Just to clarify, I’ve reviewed the list of tips, not the actual book. But I have bought a copy and suspect my first impressions will easily hold up, based on the content of the show itself and on what I’ve read so far. Incidentally, my fave tip would be Number 4: “Get curious.” I can’t separate writing from research, even when working on fiction.
Update, March 30: Yes, the tips do hold up. I’ll have more to say in the near future on the Solomonscandals.com site, where I’ll relate the tips to my experiences writing Scandals.
