Josh Freese promotes album with packaged ‘extras’

By Chris Meadows

image One of the most often-cited aphorisms of the post-Napster age is that musicians (and other artists or authors) will have to make a living selling other things than just the music in their albums (or their other basic works). Drummer Josh Freese (ex-member of Nine Inch Nails; current member of the Vandals, Devo, and A Perfect Circle) has taken this idea to heart.

His new solo album, Since 1972, will be available on his website as digital downloads for $7, or $15 for the physical CD/DVD set plus downloads. However, there are various tiers of “extras” packages that fans can purchase—starting at $50 (for the digital and CD albums, a T-shirt, and a thank-you phone call from Josh) and going all the way up to $75,000 (for which Josh Freese will join your band for a month and take you on a limo ride to Tijuana, among other things).

Some of the pricier offers are bizarre enough that it is hard to believe Freese is serious. As many millionaires as there are in the world, you would think at least one might be enough of a fan to want to take him up on those higher-priced packages.

But serious or not, this “extras” list is certainly a clever (not to mention hilarious) example of thinking outside the (jewel) box.
