Just in case you had forgotten

By Paul Biba

The Penny Arcade webcomic had some funny things to say about the e-book on Monday:

In the news column that went with it, Tycho noted:

The Kindle has begun to proliferate substantially here, so that almost half the people I work with either own one currently or stand on the threshold, hands clasped, awaiting its imminent arrival.

I am resistant to technology for technology’s sake, at least I imagine that I am, but anelectronic book is simply beyond the strength of my professed virtue. Gabriel is a technologyslut, rutting with this or that portable whoozit, but for some reason is iron-clad when it comes to the Kindle. The conversation generated between these two poles was radiant with searing heat, and I wish we could have recorded it. One conclusion we could both comfortably agree on is that books are still an incredible – even competitive – technology.

  1. That’s a great comic — thanks Paul.

It’s based on a hilarious article published in “Punch” about 40 years ago: the new technology is called B.O.O.K.

If you search for “B.O.O.K.” on web, you’ll need to use Gigablast search engine to find it, because Google ignores the dots.
