I always strip DRM and make backup copies in HTML or ePub format just to be safe. I don't want to wake up one day to news that Amazon doesn't support certain books anymore or something else stupid. It's probably less likely to happen with Amazon with the Kindle now but it did recently happen with Fictionwise and I had books that were affected. The books are offered to me in ereader format now but that format is useless to me. Luckily I have my DRM stripped books on my Kindle and backed up.

I like my Kindle, I read books on my Kindle, I buy books for my Kindle... even books with DRM from Amazon. Evil Empire or not.

Even though it wouldn't be too hard, I've never bothered to strip DRM from my Kindle.

Don't support the Evil Empire. Stay away from the Kindle :-) A Sony or a Cybook would be a better choice (and less expensive).

You could always take the DRM off for your step-dad. I plan on sending my parents my original Kindle now that I have a Kindle 2 and I'm going to offer to show them how to strip DRM or do it myself. But like your step-dad, my parents will probably have little need to strip DRM unless they get another reading device that isn't a Kindle.
