Yes, too much of his "math" is based on guessing. I could as easily say that the average newspaper reader reads 100% of the front page, 50% of the section pages, of which there may be 6, and maybe a page's worth of additional articles, giving us a total of... 5 pages.

And since online readers get much of their news from blogs, which obviously didn't figure into his estimates, and I'd say the article isn't worth its weight in electrons.

This is fairy tale statistics you cant just randomly multiply a circulation of 55million to 115million and then asume that eveyone of them reads 25 pages every day and well this is what he is actually doing.

a more realistic calculation is based on the 55m circalation and maybe 10 dayly page reads this brings the total tally of montly views down to 15bn pr month ginving the online pages a share of 20% something that seams more plausble

And remember we dont count CNN.com news.yahoo.com news.msn.com and news.aol.com into this statistics because those arent newspapers, but belongs in the broadcasting segment. even though the content can be similar and that sites like cnn.com obviusle break more stories then most newspapers.

The trend seams to be that newspaper circulation is dropping and web readership is rising but it might be taking some time.

i gues it depend on definition yes if you define newspapers in the narrow sense where only print and ebook editions count yes he's absolutely right, if you count web based news reading the figures are probably completely reversed with maybe 10-15% market share to print.

the underlying and often forgotten element here is that broadcast media is taking alot of market share from traditional newspapers when you go online, and this might not be the disaster after all newspapers have been taking the bulk of their "news" of the air for decades.

I question Martin's figures... is he assuming viewing eyes based on number of newspapers delivered, click-throughs at news sites, ad revenues, comparisons to radio- and TV-based news programs, national or global markets, or what?

Did that calculator have a battery?
