Defective Kindle 2s? Fuzzy characters and contrast woes only on certain units? Or at least much worse on them?

By David Rothman

image Some Kindle 2 owners say that the newest Kindle is a downgrade in a sense.

The characters aren’t as sharp as before, the owners say, and the contrast between text and the background suffers.

But could this be a problem only with certain units, or at least much worse on certain ones? And can you end the problem in some cases by swapping your current K2 for a new one? Here’s what Kindle owner John Hagewood has written us:

My first Kindle 2 was giving me headaches and driving me crazy with the lack of contrast (compared to my year-old sony 505). After comparing it to another Kindle 2 in the office though, I called Amazon and said, ‘I think mine has a bad screen.’ They over-nighted me another one, no questions asked. The font is CRISPER by far, and the the background is a little lighter, which helps. No more headaches!

I STILL wish it had a “bold all text” option though. The Sony font still looks better and is easier on the eyes.

But be aware that Kindle2’s with “bad screens” are adding to this problem.

Anyone have thoughts on the above, one way or another? Or actual experiences like John? If you do try an exchange, let us know if Amazon obliges you and if that helps.

  1. I feel a bit vindicated by this somewhat scientific evidence:
