15,000th title from Distributed Proofreaders: First volume of the oldest scientific journal in English
Congratulations to Distributed Proofreaders.
DP “recently completed its 15,000th title, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society – Volume 1 – 1666," according to Juliet Sutherland, the proofreading group’s director.
As described in Wikipedia, Transactions “is the oldest scientific journal printed in the English-speaking world and the second oldest in the world, after the French Journal des scavans. It is still published, making it the world’s longest running scientific journal. The use of the word ‘philosophical’ in the title derives from the phrase ‘natural philosophy,’ which was the equivalent of what we would now generically call ‘science.’”
And speaking of noncontemporary books: Google Book-Scanning Pact to Give Libraries Input on Price, in today’s New York Times. Don’t confuse “input” with “control,” of course. Arbitration would settle disputes over prices charged libraries.
