Perhaps I spoke to forcefully in calling it "trickery", but I don't wish to encourage a marketplace where I have to hand over my credit card before I can discover what I can buy and how much it will cost me.

It appears that eMusic is the only significant DRM-free audiobook source (even though Random House Audio no longer requires DRM), but I wish the store were more accessible.

I agree with you as to their hiding their pricing. I've never joined up because it is almost impossible to find out what their pricing or catalog is without signing up first. I don't know if it's trickery, but it's certainly not consumer friendly.

My problem with eMusic remains, however: they obscure everything in an attempt to trick money out of me. I can't browse the catalog of music without signing up for a monthly subscription. While you can browse through the audiobooks, it isn't clear what they cost. Some press releases state the very fair price of $9.99 for one book or $19.99 for two. However, some books are 2 credits. Does that mean I only get one book that month? In addition, it appears that the audiobook subscription is in addition to a forced music subscription (the cheapest being $11.99 a month).

I like what eMusic is attempting to do, but I'm always concerned when a company is this determined to hide their pricing.
