Because I will be paying roughly the same telephone bill I am paying right now with my current company, but now I can have (finally) an awesome ebook reader for free (well, almost free... I am paying 19 euros for the device). I just need something I can use to call my family and friends... if I can use that same device as an excellent ebook reader without paying a higher bill for my calls, and with the addition of the nice features that a regular iphone has over other cellular phones... hey, I bite that hook (18 months in my case) with pleasure. When you buy an iPhone and are on the hook for 24 months at $100+/- per month the hardware is a small percentage of your total contractual obligation. How many people are really going to pass up the neat new features of the 3GS to save an initial hundred bucks on a $2400 total cost?
