E-book gizmo news: Sub-$300 COOL-ER Reader (maybe), plus FBReader for Jetbook

By David Rothman

image A color screen COOL-ER e-reader for less than $300 by Christmas? Perhaps.

So goes some intriguing scuttlebutt from Galley Cat, which talked to the founder of the company, Neil Jones.

In other gadget news at MobileRead, we learn that FBReader will show up in the Jetbook in the next firmware update. FBReader, for the benefit of newbies, can read the ePub industry standard and can call up public books from within the program.

Odd. Maybe until now it’s been beta, but ECTACO told me in email that FBR was already in the jetBook. Perhaps this is a needed update? It certainly needs the CSS!

From just using a jetBook, I had the feeling that some primitive (or striped down) version of FBReader was being used. I don’t know for sure what the current firmware is using.

This next firmware is supposed to add the latest version (0.10.7) of FBReader. David’s sentence should have been more specific, as we don’t know if an older FBReader is or isn’t already being used.
