War on Craigslist sex ads could help alt weeklies: E-book angles?

By David Rothman

imageWhoops. The crackdowns on Craigslist’s sex ads are simply shifting the action to alt weeklies. “Here at Washington City Paper, where few ad categories in recent memory have been the stuff of legend, adult ads in the first week of May were up 38 percent over the same time last year, says Heather McAndrews, the company’s classifieds manager,” quoted in a CP blog.

Now, what about e-books? Sex is hot. Suppose the feds declare war on digital “smut” and E is caught in the trap. Good news for old-fashioned paperbacks? Then again, you can’t hide naughty reading habits as easily with P as with E. So, in effect, given the threat to commerce, a crackdown just might be reverse stimulus legislation.

Coming in time: Sex ads in e-books. For all I know, they might be out there already.
