Did Kindle price drop result from PVI’s buy of E Ink?

By David Rothman

image A ZDNet item raises that possibility:

“Amazon appears to be the beneficiary of Prime View International’s acquisition of E-Ink. The deal, announced last month, aligns Kindle’s assembler—Prime View—with the maker of the device’s screens (E-Ink). Put them together and it only makes sense that Amazon get a better price.” Source of this hypothesis is Goldman Sachs analyst James Mitchell.

If this happened, what does it mean for PVI’s prices to other hardware vendors relying on it?

  1. It’s possible that Amazon’s getting a price break, but this also might be a planned price drop. The original Kindle had a price drop at about the same time in it’s existence.

  2. It could more likely be that since the DX is proving to be so popular (and appears to be yet again sold out) that the K2 is backing up in the warehouses.

Nothing like a sale to help clear out inventory!
