Serious iPhone SMS bug allows your iPhone to be taken over

By Paul Biba

bug.jpgThis isn’t ebook related, but is more in the nature of a public service announcement. Forbes is reporting that there is a serious iPhone bug that can allow your phone to be taken over. The bug will be announced at the Black Hat Conference on Thursday. Since so many of our readers use iPhones I thought it we should alert you to the article:

If you receive a text message on your iPhone any time after Thursday afternoon containing only a single square character, Charlie Miller would suggest you turn the device off. Quickly. …

“This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn off your phone,” Miller told Forbes. “Someone could pretty quickly take over every iPhone in the world with this.”

Though Miller and Mulliner say they notified Apple … about the vulnerability more than a month ago, the company hasn’t released a patch, and it didn’t respond to Forbes’ repeated calls seeking comment.

  1. Here’s an Ars Technica report on this SMS hack from the beginning of July.

Looks like Apple didn’t get the patch for this out before details were released like they/somebody said they would. Ouch.
