Sony announces $399 wireless reader

By David Rothman

Here are early reports from Google News Roundup. From ZDNet: Sony exec Steve Haber “announces ‘Reader Daily Edition, our first 3G wireless reader with 7-inch display.’ Can be used vertically, horizontally. It’s wireless and touchscreen. Sync with PC and Mac. Available this December for $399.”

TeleRead’s Paul Biba is at the New York Public Library to report the news conference, and we’ll have more details.

Meanwhile via Engadget we’ve learned that you “can register for a library card” via Sony software, “and then check out e-books from the ‘library’ over the internet. Content expires in 29 days. No late fees!” The NYPL, your own library, a private library, just what? The word “Library Finder” suggests that this could mean any public library. Nice going, Sony—if that’s what is meant. A partnership with OverDrive? There’s also talk, inevitably, of the new eBook Library software, which will work on Macs.

In addition Sony and the New York Public Library have worked out an agreement to make it easier for Sony owners to have access to NYPL content.

From what I’ve seen - it appears it will be the NYPL plus local US libraries. But it may not apply to Canadians.

  6. The reader will probably be US-centric. I find this very disappointing as a frequent supporter of the Sony store. Shortcovers should be inking deals with Sony so we can have the 3G reader up here. I fail to understand why there has to always be geo-centric roadblocks. Anyway, let’s see what happens.
P.S. why prevents me as a Canadian from withdrawing books from the NYPL? They use Adobe Digital Editions the same as the OPL. What does it matter as long as I pay for the library card?

  7. Steve Haber specifically refused to discuss anything outside the US, so we don’t know about Canada at this point.

  8. David - did they mention any dates regarding Mac software release? I thought the release was supposed to correspond with the press announcement.

    Just wondering.

  9. Hi, Jean. Paul can answer, if he knows. I don’t see Macs mentioned in the current “System requirements”. No mention of anything later than Version 2.5. But maybe something will be changed soon. Otherwise you may have to wait a few months. Sorry. David

  10. Rats. Guess I’ll be installing more stuff into my vmware image…

  11. Steve said the Mac software was part of the 3.0 release that was available today.
