GetJar: Almost 57,000 cellphone apps, including the e-book variety

By David Rothman

image Getjar has nearly 57,000 apps for cellphones—more than any rival other than the iPhone app store. eReader and Wattpad were among those I found when I searched under ebooks, as well as the Libris app with access to the Feedbooks collection.

Alas, not all the apps are up to date. Getjar lists a 2008 version of eReader, for example, and I didn’t see a list of the phones it’s compatible with (nor did I find a single user review).

Helpfully, though, if you want, the GetJar will call your cellphone, then restrict the displayed offerings to those that will work with your particular model. The Jar, I suspect, refers to the .jar extension used for Java-based apps, which, by the way, aren’t the only ones on the site.

An excerpt from GetJar: The unkwown app store leader, on the CNET site:

Since Getjar’s virtual store went live in early 2005, about 650 million applications have been downloaded. And momentum has been growing. For the month of October, Getjar executives say the company saw its users download 55 million applications, which is a 267 percent increase over the same month a year ago when 15 million mobile applications were downloaded. And the company says that it has more than 300,000 registered developers uploading applications to its site.

All in all, this looks like  useful site for non-iPhone owners, just so you’re aware of its limitations.
