Nuut news: Just Korean DRM? And .txt is the only outside format

By David Rothman

Nuut“At this time the device will only be offered for sale in Korea. It supports the Korean language, English, Japanese, and some traditional Chinese characters and may support some European characters. The device is designed to utilize the same drm that is used throughout Korea. The only outside format it accepts at this time is .txt. There are 3 font sizes and the ones shown on the website are the middle font size. At this time they will not be preparing the device for overseas sales. They have a lot of work to do before they are ready for that.” - Fictionwise list member’s posting.

The DRM angle: I wonder if the DRM system is used outside Korea. Beyond that, keep in mind the quality and quantity available for it in English and other outside languages.

Related: Earlier TeleBlog post. Reviewing the information given out so far, I’m not surprised that this is Korean-only, but the lack of ability to read HTML from the start is a bit disappointing from a company that’s focusing on the number of books that its hardware will read. Let’s hope that the Nuut’s foreign versions will be released sooner than expected and can deal with Mobi, the IDPF format and others. At this point, the only thing the machine really has going for it is the use of a brighter E Ink screen and the apparent $280 price (relevant only in Korea, anyway). I think that the French site referenced earlier may have been a bit too optimistic about the Nuut as a global machine. Bookeen and other rivals—including Sony, at least if it gets the format game straight—will clean Nuut’s clock unless it moves quickly.
