Buy.com Nokias 770s: Bad screens common? Review of newer N800 is on the way

By David Rothman

Nokia 770So are the rumors true?

Are the $144 Nokia 770s at Buy.com having problems with bad screens and also with the White Screen of Death? That would certainly be at odds with the predominantly favorable reviews from Buy.com shoppers, but I’m still curious.

Meanwhile, stay tuned for a review of the N800—the 770’s successor—today or tomorrow, complete with my thoughts on how it works with FBReader. Find out whether I agree with Roger Sperberg’s conclusions.

  1. I can’t comment on the N770 from Buy.com, but the one I got from Woot.com lasted for 2 hours before the white screen of death. So, yes, I would say that the 770 has problems. I am currently in Nokia Customer Support Hell. You have to wait 30 days before they can bump your problem up to the Executive Resolution Team. I am hoping to get a cash settlement, rather than a repaired POS, and never buy another Nokia product.

  2. My 770 WSoD’d after 6 months. Nokia refunded me the whole amount since it languished in repair for more than 30 days and they were saying (at the time) that they were no longer repairing the 770, which I then spent on an N800 on launch day (less than a week later, given the way the timing worked out).

  3. I, too, have had a WSOD failure from my Nokia 770 from Buy.com. Buy.com will not accept a return. One support rep at Nokia said they “know” about the problems some Buy.com customers are having. Yet, through multiple phone calls and e-mails with Nokia, they only comment that they need to repair the device as that is their warranty - repair or replace with a refurbished model. I have asked them to escalate the matter higher, but it never goes up the ladder. My device WSOD’d exactly 1 month from the date I ORDERED the device from Buy.com, with only about 10 total hours on the device, and now Nokia expects me to accept a REFURB. BS. I plan to wait and see what I get back from Nokia, but fully expect to do a credit card chargeback for the device (which I loved during the functioning times!)

  4. Are all the N770s refurbs? I am wondering about Tiger Direct ($140) or OnSale ($145) plus shipping.
I would consider Hypatia Way (know nothing about it but has a 5-star rating) for $200, free shipping, if it was a new unit.

  5. Hi, Deanna. Buy.com and TigerDirect don’t appear to use the word “refurb” or “used” on the pages I’ve mentioned in the latest item, the one reporting the $139.99 price at TD. But, yes, it wouldn’t hurt to ask that question over the phone. - David
