The triumph of social sites: Publishers, listen up!

By David Rothman

topeightwebsitesE-marketer reported…on the most popular websites in the world, ranked by page views. Half of the most popular websites are social media.” - Publishing Talk.

The TeleRead take: As if publishers don’t already have enough reasons to experiment with interactive e-books! While PT talks about Web sites, I want to see author-reader dialogue taking place within books, too. See why, along with others, I’m pestering the IDPF to get cracking on standards for shared annotations? Annotations make in-book communities possible. Communities means repeat visits and more interest in the subscription model.

Details: Yep, the PT item and the chart are more than a month old, but the main point lingers on. Speaking of community, the PT blog, spotted via Joe Wikert, is a discussion board as well and even has a Facebook mesh. Thereby reinforcing my point!
