There is a wonderful quote in Douglas Adams's radio scripts for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Fearful of being put out of work, the Amalgamated Union of Philosophers, Sages, Luminaries and Other Professional Thinking Persons calls for industrial action when a giant new computer called Deep Thought is built. "You'll have a national Philosophers' Strike on your hands." they threaten.

"Who will that inconvenience?" inquires Deep Thought mildly.

Likewise the novelists' strike. What a pity it's only fiction!
