Sob, my OLPC XO-1 is kaput for now

By David Rothman

olpcDAVIDSjan2008 Carly’s work machine is down, and now my OLPC XO-1, my flagship e-book reader, wants to keep it company.

I’m getting some kind of firmware-related error (JFFS2 territory), after having earlier let the power run down. Shouldn’t have harmed XO-1 permanently.

Meanwhile any XO-1 gurus reading this are welcome to e-mail me with ideas. Might this page be my salvation?

Stay tuned, folks. OLPC has billed its gizmos as easy to maintain, and we’ll see how things shake out. I’m optimistic.

  1. David,

May I humbly suggest that you note your problems on the OLPC News XO Laptop Help Forum. Its a well-spring of geeks who’ve help many through difficult XO problems.

  2. Totally agree with your description of the OLPC News forum, Wayan. I’ll be e-mailing an OLPC guy we both knew, but I’ll definitely try your forum and others if I don’t get a reply. Thanks for the reminder. David (hardly a guru on XO-1 firmware/flash memory issues)

Try http://forum.laptop.org/ as well. The other thing to do is to use a USB key and re-flash your XO to build 656 (the latest stable build). See http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Secure_Upgrade. Note: If you re-flash using the USB key, you will lose your data.
