Ever damaged your E Ink machine—and what happened next?

By David Rothman

image BooksOnBoard has just started offering two- and three-year damage protection policies for CyBook Gen3 buyers—at $60 and $100 respectively. Are such plans worth it for E Ink users, given the fragility of the screens? Have you yourself damaged your E Ink gizmo, be it the Cybook, Kindle or any other brand? If so, what happened next? Was it more economical just to discard the machine because of the cost, perhaps $200+? What kind of treatment did you get from the vendor? Any suggestions to share with other TeleBlog community members? Related: BoB news release.

  1. Last year, my wife crushed her Sony 500 in the car door, cracking the screen in several places. She went out and bought a 505 on the same day after checking with me to see that repairs would indeed be uneconomical. While the insurance might have been interesting in this case, the downtime of dealing with insurance and repair (shipping back and forth) would most likely outweigh the monetary benefit gained. I can only see this getting worse for the insurance companies as (hopefully) with volume business eInk devices start getting cheaper.

However if anybody wants a slightly used Sony 500 reader… :)

  2. Somehow I got a small damaged spot on my Sony PRS-505. It looks like something small and pointy (my keys, perhaps) dented the screen, and the e-ink underneath is just gray and non responsive. The whole spot is only a couple millimeters across and is at the very bottom of the screen, where the page number shows. It doesn’t bother me, so I haven’t done anything to repair or replace it. Been like that for several months without getting bigger or smaller, just staying a gray little blob.
