New e-mail list for .epub fans
By Jon Noring
Since interest in the new IDPF EPub e-book open standard appears to be growing by leaps and bounds, I’ve started a new Yahoo Group for detailed discussions about EPub, called EPub Community.
EPub Community is intended for publication creators, developers, readers, and anyone else interested in all things related to EPub and the IDPF specifications which underlie EPub (OPS/OPF/OCF). Although the group’s focus is likely to be fairly technical, we certainly invite and encourage non-technical discussions. More generic discussions about e-books, and other non-EPub-related discussions, can happen at Book Futures, The eBook Community or Digital Text Community.
Subscription info: Sign up via the Web or send a blank e-mail to epub-community-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
Note that this group is independent and not affiliated with IDPF in any manner. I’m the main co-founder of this group, and have technically contributed to IDPF’s OEBPS/OPS/OPF/OCF open specifications since 1999. I have also served in leadership positions in the OEBPS working group.
Since I will be on travel/vacation the next 10 days, I’ve temporarily turned off member posting. But you may subscribe now. Hopefully in a few short days I will finalize the group’s home page Description and turn on member discussion. Anyway, discussion should not start until we reach a critical mass of subscribers.
Welcome to the EPub Community!
(P.s. Since IDPF has not yet formally recognized and standardized on any variant on the name “EPub”, one item that we will discuss in the new group is what should be the name. Variants already in use include “.epub”, “epub”, “Epub”, “EPub” (my preferred), and “EPUB”. Hopefully IDPF will standardize on something soon…)
