Sony PRS-500 owners: Any trouble accessing Sony eBook Store?

By David Rothman

image image If so, will this upgrade do the trick? As for another upgrade—one to let the PRS-500, the original Sony Reader, read ePub and DRMed PDF—I’d welcome people’s thoughts. Are the real barriers commercial? Or technical ones such as memory limitations?

Update, 4:29 p.m.: Mike Cook has some warnings about the upgrade. "Before you go ahead and update to the latest software version I would recommend you unauthorize your computer first. I didn’t and now I can not access the store…okay, so I am from the UK and can’t buy books anyway, but I do still have all the ones I bought with the free credit."

Related: The glories of file delete, the new capability for the PRS-505. It’s primitive but definitely an improvement.

  1. Hi David,

Any PRS-500 owners might want to be a bit careful on this update. Before you go ahead and update to the latest software version I would recommend you unauthorize your computer first. I didn’t and now I can not access the store…okay, so I am from the UK and can’t buy books anyway, but I do still have all the ones I bought with the free credit.

Although I knew I would not be getting ePub support, I was hoping for the re-flowable PDF, alas we 500 users don’t get that either.

…the trials of the early adopter!

Still, I’ve had almost two years of use and have no complaints. My Reader still works perfectly and the battery hasn’t lost too much life yet.

  2. Thought I would post an update because I posted the original problem. Luckily, my friend who also had the problem is an IT guru, so she was able to figure it out on her computer, then do the same thing to mine. Basically, she had to run a system restore (and some other stuff) from before the update was installed and now everything seems to work fine. We are still using the previous version of the eBook library software now, so download the update with caution if you have a 500!
