Already co-owner Steve Pendergrast’s 13-year son has built a page-turning robot to help his father test the battery life of the iPod Touch for e-reading.

So what are the preliminary results of the test?

Backlight 100%: 4.5 hours
Backlight 50%: 7 hours
Backlight 33%: 9.5 hours
Backlight 0%: 15 hours

You can read the details here. Thanks, Steve & son!

Thirty-percent brightness "great" for e-reading indoors

"I find 30 percent or so is great for indoor reading," Steve says, "which is where I usually read, so we’re talking 9 to 10 hours for iPod Touch in that situation—which is pretty darn good." Alas, he found that inverse video apparently does not stretch out battery life.

"We will of course be running tests on the 3G after we finish up with the Touch," adds Steve, whose company also owns eReader.com and offers that app for the iPhone and Touch.

"We will also test things like: does font size matter? (larger font = faster page turn time), does page animation matter? Does orientation matter?"
