Podcasting novels—and a novel podcasting study

ipod It never fails: the day I have to be away from the computer is the day I spot three or four stories that range from moderately to immensely relevant to the TeleRead blog audience.

First of all, here are a couple of interesting pieces about podcasting. Time Magazine has a piece about authors who podcast their novels. While this is a subject that has been covered here and elsewhere more than once, and Time does not reach any new conclusions, it is interesting to see a media outlet known more for print than Internet distribution taking notice.

But here’s another piece on podcasting that does reach a new conclusion: a scholastic study that purports to show that students who downloaded lectures as podcasts actually “scored significantly higher” on an exam than students who attended the lectures in person. Unfortunately, everything except the abstract is behind a paywall.

It certainly seems counterintuitive that students should learn better from a recording than from interacting with a live professor—but then again, perhaps it may be easier for students to concentrate on the material away from the distractions of the classroom. Regardless, I suspect we will be finding out more and more unexpected ways that new processes such as podcasting can change our lives for years to come.
