This was the booklist I sent to Oprah on Fri Jul 20-01 in conjunction with a cover letter. I received a confirmation from the post office on Jul 30 that my packet had been received in Chicago. I hope to hear something from Harpo Productions. BOOKLIST "Literature is a luxury. Fiction is a necessity."--G. K. chesterton. My booklist (of which this is a small part) covers everything from a relatively recent book, The Discoverers written by a former Librarian of Congress, that chronicled the discoveries of mankind in all areas of knowledge to various best-sellers and genre fiction including such exotics as AZTEC, POLAND, MANDARIN, NOBLE HOUSE, Yedo, Moghul, THE JOURNEYER, RAPTOR, CARIBBEE, WHIRLWIND, SHOGUN, and other books designed to illuminate a culture and take the reader/listener TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH (another book) while chronicling civilizations GONE WITH THE WIND . Here is a sampling of the list. I wish the fund I had started with the guide dog school had grown and that the Chicken Soup for the ... Soul people would have published my essay about Nader. ... 178. Makes Me Wanna Holler: Title from a Marvin Gay song "Inner City Blues" I did not understand McCall. He has such an animous to everything white. Yet he admits to stealing, committing armed robbery, taking part in gang rapes, violence, being in jail, fathering at least three children maybe more. I just didn't know what to make of him. He raises valid criticisms about society. But he can tell a story. Write interesting nonfiction. But how would he like to be blind and then he could really feel out of the mainstream. Wonder if Oprah ever had him on? ... 2001 26. You Can't Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought: RFB&D I liked having finally read this book. Had tried in 1994. Maybe it wasn't the right time then. I saw a book mentioned in this book on about page 309 that came out in 1991 published by Pantheon that was about all the wrong predictions the experts had made. ... 31. Diana in Search of Herself: Interesting book that puts forward the theory that Diana suffered from borderline personality disorder. Chapter 24 appears to contain a misprint. Roberto Dvorak is quoted as saying that Diana and Prince Philip had a mother-son and mother-husband relationship. William had been the subject of previous paragraphs. Not a bad book but one never knows what or whom to believe anymore. I wonder if Princess Diana really was to be in Washington, D.C. in Sept 1997 as someone at either the Hirschhorn gallery or the Textile Museum had told me. I was unable to go sightseeing anyway as my friend was unable to make it. Also skimmed briefly Other Lives, Other Selves RFB&D and The Journey Within RFB&D. ... 39. TBT: Talking Book Topics, annotated catalog of new recorded books. 40. River, Cross My Heart: Good. Not too long. But it did have some rather mystical sections like when Johnie May stared into the pot of cooking snap beans and saw her dead sister's face and at the end of the book when she is swimming in a championship and sees her sister in the river. ... **127. Things Seen and Unseen: A Year Lived in Faith. A very good book. She needs to write more. "Zap Jesus" is how she describes defrosting by microwaving the Communion Bread. Hmmm. "Doubt is to me the hand-maiden to faith; its cup, the one that keeps faith straight. To doubt is an indication of freedom; and a guard against fanatacism. But it is also so easy to doubt, so easy to be cynical that the job appears to be enlarge the part that believes, but only to enlarge it by taking the path made painful bythe doubt and with the integrity born of the doubt rather than the inflation born of sentiment, hightened emotion, or the sometimes false- comraudery of a faith community." ... "Episcopalians are Anglo- Catholics in tradition if not always in practice. That is we are a Catholic Church separated from Rome. In 1529, Henry VIII had given up his quest to have the Pope pronounce his marriage his mariage annuled, and turned toward convincing Parliament of the need for a new church. By 1534, England had an English Church with the King as its head. We are a church born in the lust and ambition of a King at a time that coincided with the Reformation sweeping Europe, a time when radical theology smuggled in from Germany happened to coincide with a political impass between royal and papal spheres of influence-as an English priest it." But Henry was not a Protestant. He refused to change the form or language of the Mass and punished those who wanted further reforms. He attended Mass 3 times a day when he was hunting and sometimes 5 times a day when he was not. In January 1547, Henry died and Reform began in earnest. Lutheran principles undergirded the many changes: the Mass was said in English, the laity were invited to become active participants rather than spectators during the service. priests were allowed to marry. In 1549, Archbishop, Thomas Cranmer, a quiet scholar who spent three quarters of his days at study finished The Book of Common Prayer. Cranmer believed in reform but loved what was best of the old. He was a genius at Liturgy and created a Mass that combined Medieval Rites with Protestant simplicity-delicate yet austere.--According to historian Owen Chadwick. She mentioned several angel movies that sounded interesting. Perhaps, Divine Wings and Too Far Too Soon. Forgot what a canon to the ordinary is. Spent too much money-$18.00 to eat sushi today. If I had not ordered dessert, green tea ice- cream, I'd have saved $3.95. I really need to stop spending money so recklessly. Got Barbara Tuchman's book, The Proud Tower and am waiting for her, A Distant Mirror. Sent an e-mail to Mrs. Green, my Reader Advisor, re The Dreams Our Stuff Is Made Of. Bryan called today-June 7-to say hello. Hadn't heard from him in a while. I suppose if I am going to journal at all I should do it in the context of this book matrix.
